FAQs

PARENTS

At what age can my Son or Daughter join the Air Cadets?

Cadets can join from 12 years old, as long as they are currently in Year 8 at school. However, some activities, like flying cadets must be 13 and 3 months.

How much does it cost?

It costs £8 a month. Additional costs may incur for Camps, Course etc.

Are my cadets expected to join the military?

No. The Air Cadets are not a recruiting organisation. Whilst many cadets do choose to join the military, the training provided by the Air Cadets is useful in Civilian life as well.

How much time are they expected to give up?

We parade for four hours a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays 1930-2130. Apart from these evenings, there are many activities to do at the weekends and in school holidays. The amount of time a cadet wants to commit is up to them, but ultimately the more a cadet puts in the more they will get out!

What activities will they be doing?

To gain an understanding on what we do, please visit this page https://www.aircadets.tv/activities/

Who leads and supervises cadets?

Most squadrons are commanded by an RAFAC Officer who is assisted by Adult Non-Commissioned Officers and Civilian Instructors. All staff and over 18 year old cadets have criminal records checks to work with young people and are fully qualified in the activities they’re involved in.

What uniforms do cadets have to wear? How do they obtain uniform?

Cadets wear blue uniform for classroom activities and green uniform for field exercises. Most uniform is issued by the squadron to the cadet for the length of time they are a member. Cadets will have to purchase items such as shoes or boots but these can be purchased cheaply from military surplus stores.

Can I be involved in the Air Cadets?

Absolutely! The Air Cadets is very encouraging of parents who can help, and we’re always looking for volunteers. You can join as a uniformed member of staff, a non-uniformed Civilian Instructor or even as a member of a Civilian committee.
